Our Mission Work Founded in Los Angeles in 1955 by Monsignor Anthony Brouwers, Lay Mission-Helpers Association (LMH) believes that the global Church needs more than just our prayers—it needs our time, our talents, our professional expertise and our treasures. We recruit, train, and send Catholic professionals—including nurses, teachers, and administrators—to serve for three years in mission Dioceses around the world.
These missionaries live and work alongside local communities, providing essential services while witnessing to the Gospel. Right now, in the Diocese of Makeni, Sierra Leone, RNs Kathy Kois and Sally Rojas provide expert medical care at Holy Spirit Hospital, treating over 12,000 patients a month. Nearby, Nancy Magloire, a PhD educator, trains the next generation of leaders at the Catholic University of Makeni. From medical care in Ghana to pastoral administration in the Dominican Republic and remote village support in the Peruvian Amazon, our missionaries use their professional skills to share God’s Love and restore human dignity.
The Needs of Our Community The communities we serve often face a critical shortage of professional resources. In many mission territories, a sick child might travel for miles just to see a nurse, or a remote village may lack the administrative support necessary for their Parish to function effectively. Our missionaries fill these vital gaps. However, keeping these professionals in the field requires significant logistical support. LMH manages the recruitment, intensive formation, international travel, medical insurance and modest living support for every missioner. Without consistent funding, we cannot respond to the urgent requests for help we receive from Bishops in mission lands.
How Donors Can Support Our Efforts Your support is the bridge that carries a professional’s skills to a community in need:
Financial Support: Your contributions directly fund the training and travel for missionaries like Kathy, Sally, and Nancy. Whether you give $10 or $100, your gift ensures that professional healthcare and education remain available to those the world often overlooks.
The Gift of Service: We are always looking for the next generation of missioners. If you are a nurse, teacher, or professional who has wondered if God could use your skills in the mission field, your "yes" is the greatest support you can offer.
Prayer: We ask for your continued prayers for the safety and fruitfulness of our lay missioners currently in the field.
Thank you for being the "Hands and Feet of Christ" through your generosity to the Lay Mission-Helpers Association.
