In the heart of Southern India, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kurnool serves a vibrant but impoverished Catholic community, striving to bring hope and the love of Christ to those in need. Spanning 26,000 square miles, we serve 105,219 Catholics across sixty-nine parishes and 273 missions. Catholics are a minority, comprising just one percent of the population, and often face economic hardship, relying on agriculture as landless laborers. As a mission diocese in a developing country where the Church is growing, we provide the following.
With 155 dedicated priests (diocesan and religious), 438 religious sisters, and 278 catechists, we address the spiritual and physical needs of our faithful, with a strong emphasis on those on the margins. Our ministry integrates several key areas:
Lay Evangelization and Faith Formation: We actively train 278 catechists who provide faith formation and pastoral care in remote villages, establishing small prayer groups and strengthening the local Church.
Serving the Marginalized: We are committed to serving the spiritual and physical needs of orphans, the elderly, the handicapped, and economically disadvantaged families. We provide shelter, care, and support, regardless of faith background.
Empowering Women: We empower illiterate women through tailoring training and small business development programs, fostering self-sufficiency, economic independence, and leadership within their communities.
Education and Community Building: We provide free education, including tuition, books, boarding, and daily necessities, to over 3,000 poor Catholic children, empowering them to break the cycle of poverty. We also maintain 83 Catholic schools.
Strong Sacramental Life: Our 69 parishes and 273 missions provide regular access to the sacraments, fostering a vibrant spiritual life within our communities.
Church Planting: We construct churches in villages where Christianity is newly embraced, providing a place for worship, community gathering, and further evangelization.
