COAR, which stands for the Comunidad Óscar A. Romero, will be making an upcoming mission appeal and asking for your donations, prayers, and interest.
COAR is located in Zaragoza, El Salvador. It was founded in 1980 by a Cleveland Diocese Mission Team priest Fr. Ken Myers during El Salvador’s brutal civil war. Fr. Ken and fellow Cleveland Mission Team members Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU, and Jean Donovan (murdered December 2, 1980) began gathering orphans from refugee camps and bringing them back to the Mission’s parish of Zaragoza.
COAR is now known as the “Children’s Village” in El Salvador with more than 1,000 day students at the school, as well as residential foster care, a scholarship program, and spiritual support. It is administered directly by the Archbishop of San Salvador through his Vicariate of Human Development. COAR’s motto is Women and Men for God and Culture: the curriculum educates the entire person. The community is led by locally-based Salvadoran directors and staff. One of the first orphans of COAR served as mayor of Zaragoza from 1998 - 2002. COAR buzzes with optimism and vitality.
However, El Salvador is deeply challenged economically and many of our students and residents have faced extreme poverty. To protect the most vulnerable simply requires food, shelter, education, and support. To educate the children and thus help propel their economy requires updated computers and new classrooms. To get the best teachers and treat them fairly requires wages near the Salvadoran national average. Please help us respond to the needs of the most impoverished among us and help them build a better future.

COAR está ubicada en Zaragoza, El Salvador. Se fundó en 1980 por el Padre Ken Myers, miembro del equipo misionero de la Diócesis de Cleveland, Ohio, durante la brutal guerra civil en El Salvador. Padre Ken y sus compañeras en misión, Madre Dorothy Kazel, OSU, y Jean Donovan, (las dos asesinadas el 2 de diciembre, 1980), empezaron a recoger a huérfanos de los campamentos de refugiados y traerlos a su parroquia en Zaragoza.
Ahora, COAR es conocido como "Villa de Niños" en El Salvador, con unos 1,000 estudiantes en la escuela además del hogar, talleres, y otros servicios. Es administrado directamente por la Arquidiócesis de San Salvador a través de la Vicaría de Promoción Humana. El lema de COAR es "Mujeres y Hombres Por Dios y Cultura”: el currículo educa a la persona de forma integral. Con más de 30 empleados, COAR fortalece la economía regional. Uno de los primeros huérfanos de Zaragoza sirvió de alcalde de Zaragoza desde 1998 hasta 2002. En COAR se ve mucho optimismo y vitalidad.
Sin embargo, El Salvador es un país muy pobre, tal y como los estudiantes de COAR. Para proteger a los más vulnerables, se necesita comida, hogar, y orientadoras para cuidar a los internos. Para educar a los niños para que modernicen su economía, se necesita computadoras modernas y aulas nuevas. Para conseguir a los mejores maestros y tratarlos justamente, se necesita sueldos a la par del promedio nacional.
