Join The Pontifical Mission Societies in a Novena to St. John Vianney, Patron Saint for Priests.
"Prayer is the first 'missionary work' – the first! – that every Christian can and must do, and it is also the most effective, even if this cannot be measured," (Pope Francis, May 28, 2018)
️Novena to St. John Vianney – Day 1: Ardent Faith
St. John Vianney was formed in faith by his devout mother and drawn to prayer from an early age. Despite many obstacles, he courageously answered God’s call to the priesthood.
Today we pray for that same deep and unwavering faith. “Lord, help me to serve You better. Grant me courage and a heart rooted in faith.”
Let's pray for all missionaries to have 'Ardent Faith' and to always have the strength to share God's love around the world.️Novena to St. John Vianney – Day 2: Complete Trust in God
St. John Vianney trusted God's providence completely and he served as an example for others to do the same. People always believed in the power of his prayer and often entrusted their intentions to him.
Today we pray for that same courage to trust God. "Lord, help me to trust You completely and live according to Your commandments."
Let's pray for all priests around the world, especially those in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, may they always have complete 'Trust in God' - that will transmit to all faithful.Novena to St. John Vianney – Day 3: True Love of Neighbor
St. John Vianney loved God completely and during his last years it specially showed in his charity towards others. He served as an example of how one should help and love our neighbors generously. His love for others was so great that it was all he could do or say - it was a way of life.
Today we pray to have that same unconditional and generous love for our neighbors. "Lord, help me be a vessel of Your love and let me honor my neighbors in everything I do."
Let's pray for all seminarians around the world and for those currently discerning their vocations. May they follow St. Vianney's example.Novena to St. John Vianney – Day 4: Horror of Sin
St. John Vianney you had a firm stance against all sins but at the same time were full of compassion for the sinners. You were welcoming to all who wanted to repent and break bad habits. You served as an example for all Confessors, who listen to us sinners and give advice on how to turn away from sin.
Today we pray to have the courage to break free from all that harms us. "Lord, help me examine my conscience and seek a true conversion."
Let's pray for all priests, bishops, cardinals or religious men who serve as Confessors - may they always have the right words to encourage the faithful to repent and allow them to have a fruitful confession.Novena to St. John Vianney – Day 5: Confessor of Souls
St. John Vianney you loved and cared for us so much that you would spend 15-16 hours in a confessional helping the souls of millions. You reminded us of the importance in having a good confession - it was essential for a Christian life.
Today we pray to develop the habit of going to Confession frequently and to fully regret my sins. "Lord, help me value the gift you have given us by the power of Confession. Give me courage to tell my sins and courage to repent."
Let's pray for our brothers and sisters with limited access to confession, as well as priests around the world who even under uncomfortable conditions listen to confessions to help our souls.Novena to St. John Vianney – Day 6: Real Presence
St. John Vianney you found comfort in the real presence of Jesus in the tabernacle. You lovingly shared with pure souls the Eucharist - so they can experience true closeness with Jesus.
Today we pray to never take the Eucharist for granted and to lovingly receive communion. and with freedom from mortal sin, obtain a desire to benefit from the Holy Communion. "Lord, help me value the gift you give through the Eucharist. In moments of happiness and sadness let me find comfort in taking the Holy Communion."
Let's pray for our all children in the world - may they experience the Real Presence of Jesus through the Eucharist.Novena to St. John Vianney – Day 7: Dispeller of Satan
St. John Vianney you were often attacked by the devil which resulted in suffering and trials, but you never gave up in your mission to convert souls. Being mortified and praying were the biggest weapons against any hardship the devil used to try to weaken you.
Today we pray to have your protection and intercession. Help me reject sin, help me rely on the Holy Sacraments and live a life of virtue as God intended. "Lord, help me dispel any trace of the enemy. Give me the strength to not fall in any trap he might use to weaken me."
Let's pray for mission countries where Christians are persecuted, may they remain true to our faith.Novena to St. John Vianney – Day 8: Exquisite Purity
St. John Vianney you were often praised as an angel trapped in a mortal's body. Your life was one of modesty and it was manifested in the purity that radiated from your body. You taught us many virtues that you claimed resembled the 'perfume of a vineyard in bloom.'
Today we pray that you guard and keep the purity of my heart and mind. "Lord, let me live with integrity and dignity so that I can stay away from temptation."
Let's pray for the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV and all the youth currently gathered in the Jubilee of Youth.Novena to St. John Vianney – Day 9: Desire for Heaven
St. John Vianney your remains are in a reliquary, but the true glory is the one you are enjoying with God. You would often say "one will rest in the other life" and you were right. Now you are in eternal peace and happiness.
Today we pray to one day be able to follow you. I pray to have the ability to work hard in this earth to save my soul when my time comes to join you. "Lord, help me work on my own salvation and then spread the Good News to others, so I can have eternal peace and happiness like St. John Vianney."
Let's pray for Mission Dioceses, for those who help support their initiatives. We also pray for all children and teachers in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, that will begin a new school year this month.
