One of the Asian countries located near the southern coast of India is known as Sri-Lanka which was formally known as Ceylon when this country was under the British reign until 1948. Sri Lanka is a beautiful Island in the Indian Ocean located near the southern coast of India which is called the pearl in the Indian oceans namely the sinhalese and Tamil. There are twenty three million people living in this country. There are two ethnic communities living in Sri Lanka.
30 years of Civil War in the country, especially in the north and east had made an impact on the normal life of the people. The war has created community consisting of many single-headed families. We are already involved in feeding and educating the parentless children, caring for the elderly and rehabilitating the disabled and assisting in so many other ways those who had lost their family bread winners.
The country of Sri Lanka, as you know, is currently facing a severe economic crisis leaving the people facing enormous difficulties to make both ends meet. The people face untold hardship from the present economic crisis where economic mismanagement of the Government leads to unprecedented levels of inflation that brings shortage of medical supplies and the shortage of fuel for a smooth transportation. As the prices of essential food commodities are rising day by day, the people are faced with trouble managing their daily meal, and education of their children. The younger generation already face unemployment problems and the daily workers' salary remains the same. As a matter of fact, each and every family can not afford to have three meals a day. Hence, the church particularly in the diocese of Mannar hoping to use the proceeds of the mission appeal for the above said purpose.
I would share with you the challenges and difficulties that we face in our pastoral ministries within the diocese.
First of all the whole country had a bitter experience of the Civil War for 30 years.
Second, the country's devastation of life and properties by a Tsunami that caused severe damage in the country.
Third, the severe economic crisis in the nation where each and every person faces trouble in terms of food, medical facilities.
Yours sincerely in Christ, Rev. Fr. Anthony Sebamalai Mission representative for the diocese of Mannar, Sri Lanka in the USA
